Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a child Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford's passion for acting started in her early years. She joined the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she wasn't a good fit. Ford, instead of applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot after her third try made an application and secured acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford was not able to complete her degree in 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first television appearance on the show Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Also, she was a regular performer at the theater, ultimately being a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. However, Tate soon began to garner attention for her stand-up comic, which she added to her show in 1996.
